Hot Cereal aka Farina

With the winter months coming, a nice bowl of hot cereal is a great morning meal to have.  I love farina because it is a nice alternative to oatmeal.  It has a smoother texture than cooked oats and just seems to hug your body as you eat it.  On its own, cooked farina is quite bland, but is completely transformed when sweetened with a handful of berries and a drizzle of honey.  I ate this all the time as a child, so maybe there is a fair bit of nostalgia to my liking of hot breakfast cereals… So stay warm, and enjoy!

(makes one serving)
Ingredients:
– 1 cup water
– 3 tablespoons farina
– pinch of salt
– brown sugar
– berries (your preference)
– honey

1.  In a small sauce pan, bring the water to a boil.  Stir in the farina and salt, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring constantly, until the farina is slightly thickened (about 2 minutes).  Remove from heat, then sweeten to taste with 1-2 teaspoons of brown sugar.  If it is too thick, just stir in a bit of water.
2.  Place the farina into the serving bowl, then top with some berries and a drizzle of honey.
3.  Wasn’t that easy?  Now go eat!
